How to Setup Mobile Device Management

If you need any assistance at any point during this process, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Prerequisite: Wait for confirmation from Elate that your account is ready for Mobile Device Management (MDM) enrollment. Taking action before MDM is setup and confirmed from the platform side first will result in failure.

Android Phones (devices)

Set up an existing device

If you are using an existing personal device:

1. Open your device's Settings app.

2. Tap Accounts. If you can't see 'Accounts', tap Users & accounts.

3. At the bottom, tap Add account.

4. Tap Google.

5. Enter your G Suite or Cloud Identity account email and password.

6. You will be prompted to set up a work profile to keep corporate data secure and separate from your personal data.

7. Choose which products you want to synchronize to your device.

Set up a new device

If you have a new (or factory-reset) device:

1. Turn on your device.

2. Follow the on-screen steps until you're prompted to enter a Google Account.

3. Enter your managed Google account and password.

4. Choose how to use the device:

  • If the device is NOT owned by the company, check “I own this device”. This will create a work profile on the device to keep work information separate.
  • If the device is owned by the company, do NOT check “I own this device”. The device will be set up in fully managed mode.

5. Follow the on-screen steps until setup is complete.

iOS Phones (devices)

Initial Requirements:

Update to the latest version of iOS

iTunes account

An active version of Safari

When it comes to iOS setup, there are 3 setup options.

Option 1: User Enrollment

Follow these Steps if you want:

-The User to be the ultimate owner of the phone

-The User to be able to remove the configuration profile

-The Company to be able to pull company information and limited details from phone

Steps:

1. On your iOS device, open the App Store and search for Gmail.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the app.
-You might need to enter your Apple ID and password.

3. When the installation is complete, open Gmail .

4. Tap Sign in >> Google >> Continue.

5. Sign in using your Google Workspace account.
-Your Google Workspace account is the account that you use for work or school.

6. To receive push notifications from Gmail, grant permission by tapping Allow when prompted.

7. If you’re prompted to download a configuration profile, tap Next, or choose an option:

-To let us manage the whole device, tap Continue with device enrollment.
-To let us manage only work apps and data, tap Continue with user enrollment.
-Follow the prompts to download the configuration profile and go to Install the configuration profile

iOS Option 2: Device Enrollment

Follow these Steps if you want:

-The User is the ultimate owner of the phone

-The User to be able to remove the configuration profile

-The Company to be able to pull company information and all configuration details from phone

Steps:

To use Google apps (such as Gmail)

1. On your iOS device, open the App Store and search for Gmail.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the app.
You might need to enter your Apple ID and password.

3. When the installation is complete, open Gmail.

4. Tap Sign in >> Google >> Continue.

5. Sign in using your Google Workspace account.
Your Google Workspace account is the account that you use for work or school.

6. If you want to receive notifications from Gmail, tap Allow.

What’s next?

  • If you open Gmail and see your work email messages, you can start using the app right away.
  • If you see a prompt to install the Google Device Policy app, go to Install the Google Device Policy app
  • If you’re prompted to install a configuration profile, choose an option and go to Install the configuration profile
    • Tap Next.
    • To let us manage the whole device, tap Continue with device enrollment.
    • To let us manage only work apps and data, tap Continue with user enrollment.

To use iOS apps

Install the Google Device Policy app

To make sure that your organization’s data stays safe, you might be asked to install the Google Device Policy app.

Install the Device Policy app

1. Choose an option:
-If your device prompted you to install the app, tap App Store.
-If you didn’t see a prompt, open the App Store and search for Google Device Policy.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the app.
You might need to enter your Apple ID and password.

3. Open Google Device Policy >>, read and swipe through the information screens, and tap Continue.

4. If you want to receive notifications from the app (recommended), tap Allow.

5. Tap Get started and sign in using your Google Workspace account.
Your Google Workspace account is the account that you use for work or school.

6. Tap Accept to agree to the Terms of Service.

7. Tap Download >> follow the steps to install the configuration profile.

Install the configuration profile

If you see a Device Policy alert message that asks you to install a security profile, follow these steps.

You might be prompted to install a Google mobile device management configuration profile on your device. This profile helps us to protect your organization's data on the device.

To install the configuration profile:

1. Tap Allow to download the configuration profile.

2. Tap Close >> open your Settings app.

3. If you followed the previous steps for profile-driven enrollment, tap General >> VPN & Device Management.

4. Depending on your business requirements you will need to do one of the following actions:
-Tap General >> Profile >> Google Apps Device Policy Profile.
-Tap Profile Downloaded.

5. Tap Install.

6. If prompted, enter your device passcode and tap Install.

7. Depending on your business requirements you will need to do one of the following actions:
-Tap Install >> Trust.
-Tap Continue >> sign in with your work account.

8. Tap Done or Continue. To approve your device, you’ll get a message at your work or school email address.

9. If you see a prompt to install the Google Device Policy app, tap Install and follow the prompts. For details, go to Install the Google Device Policy app

10. Close your Settings app.

To get work apps, open Google Device Policy >> tap Menu >> Apps.

Option 3: Company Owned

Follow these Steps if you want:

-The Company to be the ultimate owner of the Phone

-The Company to be able to see or do whatever they want with the phone and its data

Steps:

  1. Turn on the device.
  2. Follow the prompts to set your preferred language, connect to a Wi-Fi network, and create a passcode for the device.
  3. On the Remote Management screen, tap Enroll my iPhone.
  4. When prompted, sign in with your personal Apple ID and set up Apple security settings. If you use an Apple ID that you used with a different mobile-management solution, the Google Device Policy app might not install. You need to use a different Apple ID. If you start setup and it doesn’t complete, you need to factory reset your device and then restart setup with the new ID.
  5. If you’re using a new Apple ID, finish setting up the new ID in the App Store:
    • Restart your device. When prompted to install the Device Policy App, click Install and sign in with your Apple ID and password.
    • If you get an error about using your Apple ID for the first time in the App Store, click Cancel or Review.
    • Open the App Store app.
    • Tap your Apple ID >> View Apple ID.
    • Sign in with your Apple ID and password and complete the setup with your billing address.
    • Factory reset the device and use the same Apple ID to set up the device again. The Google Device Policy app installs during setup.
  6. If you try to restore from an iCloud backup during setup, you might not be able to use apps on your device. We recommend skipping the restore option. Your personal apps won’t automatically set up on your device. However, when you add the account for personal apps, your personal data will sync when the setup is complete.
    If the setup doesn’t complete, factory reset the device and restart setup.
  7. Wait while the Google Device Policy app installs on the device.
  8. Open Google Device Policy >> and sign in using your Google Workspace account.
    Your Google Workspace account is the account that you use for work or school.
  9. Tap Accept to agree to the Terms of Service.
  10. Follow the prompts to finish setting up your device.

To get work apps, open Google Device Policy >> tap Menu >> Apps.
